LinkedIn Industry Categories – make sure the one you have selected for you opens the right doors
It’s all about getting found…
When I first set up my LinkedIn profile wayyyyy back when I was doing something completely different to what I’m doing now.
The Industry Category I selected back then was the right one at the time but wouldn’t open any doors for me now.
Because my profile wouldn’t show up in any LinkedIn results when people searched for that profession.
Getting found on LinkedIn starts with LinkedIn’s algorithm
An algorithm is a complex and complicated super-sophisticated bunch of mathematical equations that do things. In LinkedIn’s case (and Google’s for that matter) what the algorithm “does” is provide answers to search queries.
LinkedIn’s search results take into account Industry Categories.
So. If you’ve changed professions but haven’t updated your LinkedIn profile it’s unlikely you’re going to show up when someone’s looking for someone who does whatever you do.

If your Industry Category needs to be changed – make sure you are logged into LinkedIn, then select HOME (this way I know we’re both starting from the same point):
from HOME → PROFILE → Edit Profile → click the pencil icon that appears next to your Industry Category – select correct industry category for you – SAVE.
